After two EXTREMELY successful events in Winster and Whittonstall, Thinking Outside The Box is back for its third outing!
Check out this video of the TOTBII workshop in May 2018:
TOTB III will focus on how to make your playing sound more interesting for jigs. We’ll be looking at how to use the left hand in a more varied way, how to add in harmony at the same time as melody on the right hand and exploring different ideas about ornamentation. As usual, this will all be based around one template tune which will be sent out in advance of the workshop so you can prep the basics.
VENUE: The Burton Institute, W Bank, Winster, Matlock, DE4 2DQ.
COST: £40pp (full payment at time of booking to secure your place). Only 25 places available. PLACES NOW FULL
ABILITY LEVELS: Beginners, improvers, more experienced players welcome. This event is not suitable for absolute beginners. Choose from:
Level 1 – Beginner: you can play a few tunes on the right hand but not very confidently. You’re battling playing both hands together. It takes you a while to pick things up. You’re just getting to grips with the left hand. You’ve not been seeing Mel for lessons for very long.
Level 2 – Improver: you’re getting to grips with playing both hands together in different time signatures (e.g 4/4, 6/8, 3/4). You’re noticing improvements in your playing that weren’t there before. Your rhythm is stabilising between left and right hands. You know your left hand map.
Level 3 – Intermediate: you’ve been playing for a while and have a good grasp of basic techniques, rhythm and right-left hand coordination. You’re ready for some new ideas and challenges. You’ve started to explore rhythm, dynamics, shaping, right hand chords etc.
Level 4 – Advanced: you’re wishing to explore some of the trickier aspects of rhythm, dynamics, coordination, right hand chords etc and get some new ideas and inspiration.
LUNCH: circa £6 per head ordered in from local pub (cash payment on the day). Choose from the options below and let Mel know when booking:
- Steak pie, chips, peas, gravy
- Veggie pie, chips, peas, gravy

- I’ll bring my own
ACCOMMODATION: There are plenty of options locally in Winster and surrounding areas. There is also camping and motorhome space at The Miner’s Standard (our pub for the weekend)

On Saturday 20th the Derbyshire Melodeon Playgroup III event will be hosted at the same venue. This is a low key day of teaching workshops, advice and discussions catering for absolute beginners, beginners and improvers. Tutors for the day are myself, Steve Dumpleton and Vicky Cooper.
Simon Lockwood is heading this event. If you would like to do both events, please let either myself or Simon know.
